La felicidad para Keri es su vida retirada. “Después de haber servido a mi país durante 21,5 años (8 de ellos luchando contra el cáncer), siento que me he ganado mi vida de jubilado y todo lo que ha resultado ser. Criar a mi hija y acudir a las citas médicas son mi nueva normalidad. ¡Una normalidad que es INCREÍBLE! Casi una década de tratamientos contra el cáncer me ha dejado exhausto, todo el día, todos los días. Luchar contra el cáncer y ser madre soltera es una batalla constante para Keri. Ella describe que “todas las noches son duras… algunas más que otras. Las primeras horas de la noche... las horas solitarias justo antes del amanecer. Es en estos momentos cuando te das cuenta de que aunque tienes un maravilloso sistema de apoyo... en ese momento... estás completamente solo. En esos momentos no hay nadie que te abrace cuando estás herido, que te acurruque cuando no puedes dormir, o que te consuele cuando estés solo y triste... nadie que te ofrezca intimidad emocional o física y el miedo de que nadie lo hará jamás. . Seamos honestos. Pedirle a alguien que salga contigo cuando tienes cáncer es pedirle a alguien que deshaga un enorme equipaje. He estado haciendo esto durante casi una década... este equipaje se está volviendo pesado”. Aunque tiene noches solitarias, Keri encuentra positividad en sus mañanas. “Cada día que me levanto y vivo un día más… es un buen día. Es a la nueva luz del amanecer que me levanto, me limpio el polvo y digo: '¡Lo tengo!' y peleo otro día”.
