Elle a une page Facebook dédiée à son combat appelée Keri's War, qui a été pour elle un moyen de transformer son combat en quelque chose de plus grand et d'inspirer les gens à rester forts. Elle a littéralement créé une équipe qui se bat à ses côtés et qui s’investit dans sa réussite pour vaincre le cancer du sein. C'est aussi leur combat et elle n'est pas seule dans son voyage.

Le bonheur de Keri, c'est sa vie de retraite. « Après avoir servi mon pays pendant 21,5 ans (dont 8 ans dans la lutte contre le cancer), je sens que j'ai mérité ma vie de retraite et tout ce qu'elle a été. Élever ma fille et aller aux rendez-vous chez le médecin sont ma nouvelle normalité. Une normalité qui est INCROYABLE ! Près d’une décennie de traitements contre le cancer m’a épuisé toute la journée, chaque jour. Être capable de donner la priorité à ma vie et de la réduire aux deux choses les plus importantes, les enfants et la santé, m'a permis de passer chaque journée sans larmes d'épuisement. La retraite m'a également donné l'occasion d'accomplir les choses que je veux faire sans trop m'inquiéter et de ne pas gaspiller d'énergie pour des choses que je ne veux pas faire… cela fait un patient atteint de cancer très heureux. Nous aimons que Keri puisse désormais se concentrer sur les choses de sa vie qui comptent le plus pour elle. C’est le côté positif de sa bataille contre le cancer.
Combattre le cancer et être mère célibataire est un combat constant pour Keri. Elle décrit cela : « toutes les nuits sont difficiles… certaines plus que d’autres. Les petites heures de la nuit… les heures solitaires juste avant l'aube. C'est dans ces moments-là que vous réalisez que même si vous disposez d'un merveilleux système de soutien… à ce moment-là… vous êtes tout seul. Dans ces moments-là, il n'y a personne pour vous tenir lorsque vous souffrez, se blottir contre vous lorsque vous ne pouvez pas dormir ou vous réconforter lorsque vous êtes seul et triste… personne pour vous offrir une intimité émotionnelle ou physique et la peur que personne ne le fera jamais. . Soyons honnêtes. Demander à quelqu'un de sortir avec vous lorsque vous souffrez d'un cancer, c'est demander à quelqu'un de déballer un énorme bagage. Je fais ça depuis près d’une décennie… ce bagage devient lourd. Même si elle passe des nuits solitaires, Keri trouve de la positivité dans ses matinées. « Chaque jour où je me réveille et vis un autre jour… est un bon matin. C'est dans la nouvelle lumière de l'aube que je me relève, que je m'époussette et que je dis : « J'ai compris ! et je me bats un autre jour.
Keri est un excellent exemple de combattante, nous lui avons donc demandé ce qu'elle pensait qu'il fallait pour en être une. Elle a répondu : « Creusez vos talons et réalisez qu’aucune inquiétude ne changera votre situation. Organisez-vous une petite fête de pitié si cela vous fait vous sentir mieux. Pleurez pour dormir si vous le devez… mais quand vous vous réveillez… enfilez votre culotte de grande fille et roulez avec. Elle estime que « pour pouvoir se battre, il faut trouver l’inspiration en soi-même ».
En tant que femme indépendante et forte, Keri continuera de nous inspirer à travers son combat ! Nous sommes à ses côtés. Nous avons et serons toujours de grands fans de Keri, de sa volonté de vivre et de sa capacité à voir le positif dans les défis auxquels elle est confrontée chaque jour.

J'ai rencontré Keri Whitehead il y a environ 7 ans, lorsque j'ai commencé à sortir avec mon mari, le M.Sgt de l'USAF. Retraité, Jeremy Lock. Il a été enrôlé avec Keri et ils étaient tous deux photojournalistes de combat. Je suis un sergent-chef principal de l'armée de l'air à la retraite, âgé de 41 ans, parent célibataire et combattant du cancer. J'ai une belle fille de 13 ans, opiniâtre et très artistique, 3 chiens et un lapin pour m'occuper.
